How to Read an NBA Jersey Label
You have picked a team. You have picked a player, maybe. Then the label stops you cold: Icon, City, Statement, Association. Four names that sound like a wallpaper folder and tell you exactly nothing.
Here is the plain-English version. The four labels describe which colour story a jersey wears — nothing more complicated than that. Once you can read them, you can walk any jersey wall and know in two seconds whether a shirt is the safe pick, the loud pick, or the collector pick.
01The four labels, in one glance
Think of the four editions as four lanes of the same jersey. Same team, same player, same number — different outfit.

02Icon: the default look
Icon is a team’s signature colourway — the one you picture when you close your eyes and think of that franchise. Lakers gold. Celtics green. Bulls red. If a friend says “just get me a Lakers jersey” and nothing else, Icon is the answer you hand them. It is also the version that ages best: five years from now it will still look like “the” Lakers jersey, not a phase the team went through.
03Association: the clean white
Association is the white side of the same coin. It exists because teams historically wore white at home, and the name stuck. Association jerseys are the ones that pair with everything — jeans, shorts, a blazer if you are that guy. If you own exactly one jersey and you want it to survive every outfit decision you will ever make, white Association is a very defensible choice.

04Statement: the alt colour
Statement is the team’s alternative identity — darker, bolder, sometimes black, sometimes a colour the franchise never dared wear in the ’90s. It is the jersey equivalent of the away-kit drop in soccer: same club, sharper edge. Fans who already own the Icon tend to reach here second.
05City: the story jersey
City is the wildcard. Every season, teams get a City design built around a local story — a neighbourhood, a flag, a music scene, a ferry route. That makes City the most fun lane and the most divisive one: some City jerseys end up all-time greats, others live in meme territory forever. Either way, a City jersey says you follow the team closely enough to get the joke.

06Which one should you actually buy
- First jersey? Icon or Association. You cannot go wrong with either.
- Already own the safe one? Statement is your next stop.
- Follow every roster move and colour drop? City, and do not look back.
- Buying a gift and sweating the choice? Icon. It is the consensus pick for a reason.
One more thing worth knowing: the label tells you the colour story, not the quality. That is a separate dial — Swingman, Fast Break and Pro Cut — and we break that whole system down in the next guide.
07Reading the label in the wild
Now that you speak the language, use it. On our jersey shelves, every product name carries its edition — “Icon Edition Gold”, “City Edition Swingman” — so you can filter a whole wall down to the lane you want in one click. The tag on the garment itself works the same way: edition name on the label, build name right beside it.
A useful habit when browsing anywhere: read the edition first, the build second. The edition tells you whether you like the jersey. The build tells you whether you will like owning it.
08The collector angle
Editions are also why jersey collecting exists. Icon and Association re-release in some form every season, but City designs rotate — a City jersey you love this year may simply not exist next year. Champions patches are one-shot prints tied to one month of basketball. And eventually, every era drifts into the retro lane and becomes a Hardwood Classics piece at three times the original fuss.
Translation: if a City design or a title-patch jersey grabs you, the worst outcome is waiting. The best ones never wait around.
09The shortlist
Which edition is the “real” home jersey?
Traditionally the white Association look. But “home” is loose now — teams wear whichever colourway the schedule hands them. Icon is the safest identity pick either way.
Do City jerseys change every year?
Yes. City designs rotate, which is exactly why fans hunt the ones that hit. If you love one, grab it while it is in the range.
Does the edition change the fit?
The cut is driven by the build (Swingman, Fast Break and so on), not the edition. Icon and City in the same build will fit the same.
